Obtaining[edit | edit source]

Natural generation[edit | edit source]

Obsidian does not explicitly generate in the Minecraft world, however it can generate if water naturally flows into lava.

Post-generation[edit | edit source]

Obsidian can be created by making water flow into a lava source block.

When entering an unlinked Nether portal, a portal will be generated out of obsidian.

Usage[edit | edit source]

A 4x5 rectangle made of obsidian, with the six blocks in the center being empty.
An example of the smallest possible Nether portal frame.

Obsidian can be used to create Nether portals by creating an obsidian portal frame, then lighting it with a fire striker.

Due to its high blast resistance and high durability, it can be used in building to make durable structures.
