Obtaining

Natural generation

Diamond ore deposits can generate underground, replacing stone and basalt, at Y=16 and below. Limestone and granite variants are only obtainable through commands and the creative menu.

Mining

Diamonds can be obtained by mining coal ore with any pickaxe. If mined without a pickaxe, it drops nothing. If mined with a golden pickaxe, it drops itself.
